dear Sir,
What are the basic things need to be considered while designing a swimming pool.shall I get an idea becoz I am doing first time.
any software can be used for this...etabs,staad?or saap?
thanx so much for ur help sir,
regards.

Answer
Hi Ravi,

The design of a swimming pool should be done from first principles, as it is relatively simple- no need to use FEM software.

The design should be done to a water-retaining code (unless you intend to specify waterproof plaster lining) and the analysis can be done for the walls as either cantilevers or propped cantilevers depending on your support conditions. The analysis of the floor (together with walls) is similar to what you would do for basements (unless it is a suspended pool), and you should consider both empty and full of water load conditions- in the former case, uplift (floatation) should be catered for especially if there is a high ground water-table.
