Question
Sir,
how would one go about repairing a bump at the end of the bridge as a result of differential settlement between the embarkment and abutment? if the bridge was built with no approach slab would it be wise to construct one and how would one treat the approach slab and bridge deck interface.

Hi Taffie,

This is a common problem and the best way to deal with it is to install some length of appraoch/transition slab, which rests on the ground at the far ends and sits on the bridge abutment (as a hinge joint). If there is not enough seating available at the abutment, you can design and build a local strip-foundation to support the approach slab.
