Question
Dear Mr.Arshad,

We have to park a 100 ton crane near to a concrete retaining wall & earth embankment. We have to determine how close to the retaining wall & embankment, we can park the crane without affecting the stability of those structures. How can we determine that. Is there any soil tests for  that?

Hi Nousar,

In order to not impose additional loading to the retaining wall, you will need to place the crane at least as far from the wall as it is high- in other words if the wall is 3 m from top to foundation, then keep the edge of your crane 3m away. Alternatively, if you need to be closer, you can dig a pit and place the crane foundation lower down, or install piles so that the load transfer is well below the level of the wall footing.
