is the base shear for a building should be the same in both direction X & Y for the building? " base shear from seismic analysis"

Hi Khaled,

If your building is symmetrical, with same stiffness in both directions, then yes the base shear will be the same. Even if the building is stiffer in one direction, so long as yoiu use the same R factor in both directions, the base shear will be the same. However, if the building structural system is very different in two directions (say shear walls in one and MRF in the other, then your R values will be different, and so base shears will be different (higher along axes of shear walls). The actual design  may depend on applicable codes, as some codes may require you to design in both directions for the higher base shear.
