Question
How far apart can I space 8x8's or 12x12's as opposed to 6x6's for the pillars that will support a deck standing 8ft tall?  I found out that 6x6's can only be spaced 6ft apart from each other to support a deck.  Can 8x8's or 12x12's be spaced further apart?

Hi Ron,

This really also depends on the sizes of the horizontal cross-members (beams) as they need to be bigger for longer spans. However, in principle, if 6X6 for posts is OK for spacing at 6 ft., then 8x8 or 12x12 can be definitely spaced further apart.
