Question
Sir,
Our project is on Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis on raft foundation. We are using ANSYS software for design and analysis.I would like to know the failure conditions that we can use to check the suitability of a particular raft.

Answer
Hi Arnab,

I am not familiar with ANSYS, but most FEA software work on the principle of beam on elastic foundations (simulated by spring supports), and normally you need to do iterative runs of the model to get upper-bound and lower-bound results in terms of contact pressures and raft deflections, and the failure conditions would be:

1. Excessive contact pressures on subgrade
2. Excessive deflections leading to cracks in raft
3. Excessive shear or moments well beyond those that can be catered for by the concrete or the rebar density.
