Question
Dear SIr,
Good day to you// I have to design a steel structure having one roof with steel columns and concrete columns and the beams would be of steel only.Is it possible to do a proper analysis in this case .How I would get inforamation regarding this design and what are the things need to be considered while using both steel as well as concrete columns.thanx so much

Answer
Hi Ravi,

You can do a proper analysis so long as you define the section properties correctly and you take care about detailing the joints in such a way that the assumed fixity conditions are realised or buildable.

For examle, you can cast a steel plate on the surface of a column, with anchors securely cast within the concrete, so that you can weld/bolt on a steel beam to that for a RC-to-structural steel connection.

You can also cast concrete around the steel column and design that as a composite section, so long as there is proper anchorage/bond for the concrete to the steel.
