What is the formula or thumb rule for calculating the depth of Footing slab for RCC column when the soil bearing capacity is given

Hi Hossain,

If you mean thickness, basically you need to work out the plan area and shape of the footing based on allowable pressure, then check the maximum shear near or around the column- this will determine the optimal depth of the footing. As a rule, the footing thickness should be at least 25-30% of the maximum length dimension.

If you mean depth, then this depends on soil conditions and location- in countries where ground frost/freezing is possible, the minimum depth of the footing is around 1.0 metre below final ground level.
