Civil Engineering/blinding concrete

Question
MR/Arshad,
I would like to inquire from you, if we can cast the blinding concrete one after another in many portion creating joints under the raft foundation for high rise building with the presence of underground water with pressure. Kindly advise the disadvantage of this practice. Is it sanctioned by any of the international codes?

Answer
Hi Maher,

Blinding concrete is required just to form a level base for the waterproofing layer and for placing rebar before casting the raft, so it is not meant to be water-tight by itself. Therefore there should be no problem in casting this in bays with construction joints. However, there must be a system of temporary dewatering which prevents groundwater from exerting any upwards pressure, otherwise the blinding will heave and you will not be able to lay your waterproofing, etc.
