Question
What is the usual deflection rate you are considering in an expansion joint if the building expansion gaps are ranging from 40mm-160mm where the building has 3basement and 5Floors up? The project location is in abu dhabi.

Hi Daven,

I am not quite sure what you mean by deflection rate, but the joint gap should be enough to cater for lateral expansions of both buildings and also for lateral sways due to wind and earthquake, taking ductility into account for the latter, so as to prevent pounding. Check out UBC-97 for more details.

As an approximate rule of thumb, the gap should be at least H/200 to H/250, if the earthquake sways the maximum permissible (H/500), where H is overall building height.
