Question
Dear Sir, In ACI code the standard bar bend radius for #10 bar is 8db. I want to ask what are the consequences if the bar bend diamtere was provided equal to half of required which is 4db? What are the outcomes of providing 4db. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Waseem,

This has two possible implications:

1. The bar could have developed cracks or strain hardening along the sharp bend, hence weakening the rebar.

2. If the bend in the bar is there to provide anchorage and the stress in the bar is high, you could over-stress the concrete that lies within the tight radius. This could lead to bond failure.
