Civil Engineering/Seismic LOad

Question
Dear Sir
I am Designing a model for a hotel located in dubai, and i know that ETABS has the defults regarding the seismic load as if its in california, what items and standards do i need to change in order to make the model compatible for seimic area 2A according to IBC. because it giving that some memebers are failing due to torsion plus shear stress and i know that is due to the over conservative design requirment for california. so i want my model to be more tolarant. cause along with the beams i have the shear walls are failing and the building period is 3.2 second which is too much for a 50 m high and i dont know honestly how to decrease it ... best regards

Answer
Hi Kamal,

Using the default UBC (not IBC)loading with zone 2A is fine for Dubai- it is not over conservative. You need to use the correct parameters for the soil conditions and the R factor, depending on the structural system of your building and you should also use stiffness modifiers as per UBC.

You are right that for a 50m (or 12-13 story) building the 1st mode period should be around 1.2 to 1.4 seconds, so this meams that your building is too flexible and needs to be made stiffer (more shear walls, or using a dual system with MRF?)
