Question
QUESTION: Good Morning Mr. Arshad Khan:

We were discussing this yesterday and I was releived with your prompt replies. There were some errors which I felt I should address to you once I went back to my residence yesterday.

1. The approximate measurements I could lay my hands on are as follows

Hole dia 2.75 inches and not cms
Length of the hole is 10 inches and not cms
Depth of the Beam is 24 inches

ANSWER: Hi,

About 3 inches diameter hole in a 24 inches deep beam should be no problem whatsoever, so long as you do not cut through any rebar and stay away from the supports- at least 75 to 100 inches away from the supports should be fine.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: It is in the middle and more than 75 to 100 inches away from the supports, but it has cut through the centre re-bars and stirrup

Answer
Hi,

You should try and avoid cutting through sturrups, unless the hole is within the middle third span where shear is low. Also, avoid cutting central rebar, which is there for crack-control, but if it cannot be avoided cutting it should not affect structural integrity.
