Question
QUESTION: 1)What is favourable  & Unfavourable actions ? (Table A1.2 (A) Page no 54 of BS EN 1990:2002

2)How to consider seismic load factors while considering load combination in Euro code ?

3)Whether Annex A1 is applicable for buildings or Industrial structures? (Annex A1 Page no 51 of BS EN 1990:2002)

ANSWER: Hi Muthu,

1. Favourable action is when the overall stress on a member is reduced, and vice versa.

2. The load combinations must be mentioned in Eurocode- usually similar to what is mentioned for wind loading. Seismic load is already ultimate, so you do not need to apply a ULS load factor.

3. Sorry I do not have a copy of that code to advise.

QUESTION: I need more clarity:

For Q1) Suppose I have Self Weight of the Foundation, Dead weight of Platform & Dead weight of the Equipment. which one i need to be consider "Favourable Permanant action" which one not ? - please clarify ?

Q2) We don't have load combinations in BS EN 1990 as like Indian code IS 875 part5. But factors are mentioned in BS EN 1990(refer table A1.1 of BE EN 1990). My understanding is whatever we have wind factor in table A1.1 of BS EN 1990 same factor we can take for seismic factor - Please advise.

Answer
Hi Muthu,

1. In this case, unfavourable for overturning would be without dead weight of equipment, and vice versa. Similarly 1.0DL + 1.4WL would be unfavourable and 1.2 (DL+LL+WL) would be favourable.

2. Yes, you can use same factors as WL for DL and LL, except take 1.0 factor for seismic.
