Question
Dear Sir,
We want to build some two to three storied residential building on newly filled area. Filling depth is 11'-0" by fine sand with trace of silt. My question is what should be the perfect choice of foundation?

Answer
Hi Masud,

This depends on how well the fill was compacted and whether the compaction was done in layers of maximum 200-250mm thickness. If it was, then you could consider pad foundations with interconnecting strap (ground) beams, or if differential settlement is of concern then you could use a raft foundation.

If the fill was not well compacted then the best solution is to use piles down to firm ground.
