what is the relevance of structural mechanics to architecture

Hi Harmony,

If you mean structural analysis and design, then the relevance is that without this discipline or input from this discipline, architects would not be able to design structures efficiently and would not be able to ensure the stability and safety of structures (apart from simple houses or such like). An analogy is the human body- architects design the skin and shape/spatial functions of the body whilst structural engineers design the skeleton and the muscles that hold up the body rigidly but at the same time allow it to sway when wind and seismic loading is applied.
