Civil Engineering/Industrial Shed Expansion

Question
Dear Sir,
Good Day!
I have to expand an existing Industrial shed by addition of one more frame(same span that of existing)in the same direction of the existing frame. In this case shall I remove the wind load coming on the intermediate column as it is considered as a compression column only.Is it possible to use the same gable column as the intermediate column while going for the expansion of shed.I presume the footing for the intermediate column is okay as there is compression force only. Thanx for the advice.Thanx so much.

Answer
Hi Ravi,

You may consider the internal column without direct wind loading, but of course the overall wind loading will be shared between the 3 columns via the portal action, unless the whole shed has roof X-bracing, taking the total wind loading to the gable ends, which are also wind-braced. And the foundation of the internal column will now have about 2X previous gravity loading, so you need to re-assess whether the existing foundations is adequate. I suggest you do an oveall analysis of the revised framing system.
