Question
sir, i am a final year student in civil engineering and i want to do my FYP this semester on a topic related to the stability of high rise buildings... could you please suggest me a topic that i can benefit from and at he same time i can find enough information on.. thank you

Answer
Hi Saddam,

I would suggest that you do a project on comparing which lateral stability systems are most suited for different heights of buildings, such as 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 storeys.

The options for these are:

1. Moment resisting frame
2. Shear walls
3. Dual system ( 1 and 2 combined)
4. Out-rigger system (works with 2 and 3 usually)
5. Pierced tube system (as used on WTC, New Yourk)
6. Bundled tube system (as used on Sears Tower, Chicago)
7. External bracing system (as used on John Hancock tower, Chicago)
9. Buttressed core system (as used on Burj Khalifa tower, Dubai).

You will finds lots of material about these stability systems on the web.
