Civil Engineering/Footing design

Question
Hi Sir,

I am a fresher in the industry.
I would like to know the design of  a tie beam.
I have an inverted t-beam footing connecting the footing of an eccentrically loaded footing (of an exterior wall) and another footing. So can this t-beam footing be used a tie beam to prevent the eccentrically loaded footing from differntial settlement?
If so, what are the special considerations, i have to make use in the design of TIE BEAM, rather than designing it as a  normal beam?

What are the special consideartions i have to make use in the design of the ECCENTRICALLY LOADED FOOTING of the exterior wall?

Thanks
Dhanya

Answer
Hi Chris (Dhanya?),

Yes, you can use the inverted T-beam as a tie beam and design it for double curvature bending/shear due to differential settlement, which you will need to determine in conjunction with the soils investigation report.

For eccentrically loaded footing design, please browse my past answers using these key words and you will find further advice.
