Question
Hi, im a newly licensed professional engr and still finding a job. they say that what a student learns in school is different from what he learns outside.. What exactly does a site engr do in his work.. i mean what are the duties and responsibilties of an engineer..

Answer
Hi Roy,

A fresh graduate in an office will learn about practical aspects of his design and how "buildable" it is. So when you go on site, the duties you will have include:

1. Checking drawings and checking clashes between architectural, structural and MEP details.
2. Checking dimensions and setting out locations of columns, walls, foundations, etc on site.
3. Checking quality of concrete and rebar and other materials against specifications.
4. Checking formwork and rebar (or structural steel) placing on site against the drawings.
5. Monitoring progress against agreed program.
6. Checking verticality and leveling.
7. Ensuring good compaction and curing of concrete (or joints, etc in steelwork)
8. Writing daily and weekly reports and taking progress photos

...and much more too!
