hello sir,
i have a question. what is the minimum & maximum thickness of an expansion joint and its spacing in multistory building as per codal provisions.

Hi Naresh,

This depends on a number of factors such as whether you are in a seismic zone, how long the structures are between joints, the expected temperature variations and also how tall the buildings are and what R factor us used in the design.

If it is not a seismic area and the lengths are no more than 30-40m either side of the joint, then the joint could be between 20-40mm wide. If it is a seismic zone and there is deanger of pounding then the joints need to be much wider. Refer to UBC-97 that gives a formula for this. Also refer to:
