Civil Engineering/Deck Slab - Steel

Question
Salaam Alaikum

Dear Sir,

I have a doubt regarding Deck Slab on Steel Deck... I want to know whether the Load is entirely taken by the steel deck or is there a composite action of concrete and steel deck ??

Please advice some material by reading which I can further understand the action of this type of construction.

Answer
Hi Muzaffer,

This depends on whether you use proprietary profiled sheet decking (such as Comflor- see http://www.steeldeckinguk.com/comflor80.html) or just normal metal decking without any bonding ribs (such as roofing sheets). If it is the latter, then there will be no composite action for the design of the slab, but if studs are incorporated into the supporting steel beams, then these beams can be designed as composite with the concrete slab (for span/sagging moments only).

If you are using proprietary decking, then you will also get composite action for the design of the slab, but only when the concrete has hardened. During casting and for 7 days thereafter, there will be no composite action, so you may need to provide temporary supports under the decking to avoid over-stress or excessive deflection of the decking.
