Question
hello
how and why modal analysis is used in seismic analysis

Answer
Dear Zena

Modal analysis is a proedure to analyze N equation of single unknown instead of 1 system of equation with N unknowns. You know that a general structure might have infinite degrees of freedom which makes it very difficult to analyze. The modal technic helps to reduce the dimensions of such a problem. You can use the modal method almost in any situation unless very serious complication exists in the structure leading to a need to be more detailed where you will need to follow the time history analysis.
