Civil Engineering/Wind and Seismic Loads at Mombasa, Kenya

Dear Sir,

Can you please tell me what is the wind and seismic loads at Mombasa, Kenya? I am designing a pump house at Mombasa. Is there a Kenyan Standard which i can refer to? What is the name and where can i find the same, Please advice.

Hi Lakshmi,

There is an old code for earthquake zoning in Kenya- it may be available from the Ministry of Works who originally published it. Mombasa falls in zone VI, which is roughly equivalent to zone 1 to 2 in UBC-97.

As for wind loading, I would use a 3-second gust wind speed of between 35 to 40 m/sec, but you can confirm this data from the meterological department or from the Mombasa airport.

My particular expertise is in the aseismic design and optimisation of tall buildings.
