Question
I am a student of architecture.
can you give me the steps and formula to design a simple rectangular RCC beam?  

Answer
Hi Sana,

Basically you divide teh span by 15 to 20 (depending on the loading- the greater the loading, use the lower figure), which will give you the depth of the beam. Adopt a width about half of the depth. Then decide on the strength of concrete (say 30 n/mm2) and rebar (say 460 N/mm2).

Then work out the bending moments and shear stresses and design the rebar to resist that.
