Question
Hi there !

I'm a Civil Engineering student from India and have a keen interest in computers as well. What softwares should a civil engineer know(other than AutoCAD)

Anticipating your reply soon,

Zeba

Answer
Hi Zeba

The most useful software is Excel or other spreadsheet, and after that an analysis package like STAAD or Prokon, or similar.

Look at following websites:

http://yakpol.net/

http://www.reiusa.com/

http://www.prokon.com/

However, a word of caution: these software are very powerful but need to be used by engineers who have a good understanding of structural behaviour and can check the output results by approximate manual methods. It is very easy to input incorrect data and have incorrect results.

I hope that helps!

Kind regards,
