Question
I'm a student and I have a project of designing a free-fall ride. It is a ride that move vertical up and drop vertically with the acceleration of gravity. The height of the free-fall ride is 50m and the area is 3x3m. It is a steel structure. I would want to know the type of the foundation that can be use for the free-fall ride and why? Is the pile foundation suitable for it?

Answer
Dear David,

Two criteria should be considered: a) gravity load, taking into consideration the dynamic effect; and b) the lateral load resulting from wind or earthquake if within such zone.

The most suitable type for this structure is the "Mat" foundation.

Hope this helps!
