Question
Hi Arshad
How would you calculate the area of a pad foundation to loaded column, where the total internal load from the colmn is 500KN and the external load is 230KN and the allowable bearing pressure is 150kN/m2. Foundations are to be 2.5 below ground level and the water table is below ground level.

Hi Said,

This is easy- just divide the total vertical load (730 kN) with the allowable bearing pressure, so the total area of the base needs to be about 5 m2, so assuming there are no moments at the base, the base can be 2 x 2.5 m or 2.25 X 2.25 m, etc.
