Question
I have a steel column which is to carry a load of 25Te, is a pad foundation the right foundation to put in? Can you tell me the formula used to calculate the size of a pad foundation?

Hi Stu,

This is not easy to answer as it depends on many factors- e.g. is the column braced in all directions, is it tall and slender which may attract secondary moments, etc, etc. In principle a pad foundation for a steel colun is OK. Just divide the total load by the safe ground bearing pressure to get the area of the pad, plus allow for any extra pressure due to moments.

Depending on the size/depth of the pad, you will need to provide adequate rebar too.
