Civil Engineering/Plate thickness calculation for a Wall Plate

Question
Dear Arshad,

I have been trying to find out the best way to calculate plate thickness of an embeded wall plate with nelson studs. Only a gravity beam to be connected to this wall plate with shear tab. Therefore, this wall plate will get only shear force from beam (with 75mm eccentricity). I did figure out cone capacity for the nelson studs, but cannot get passed plate thickness question. I have this case that 3 rows by 2 columns of nelson studs, say 150mm between columns and 125 between rows. How I did it was Vf (from beam) x 75mm (eccen.) = Mf, then Mf / 2x125mm (1.row to 3.row)= Tf, then Tf x 150mm/4 = Mf (as point load on a simple beam). Then, Mf=phi x Fy x Zx. Zx=bt^2/4. By doing so, I am getting 1 1/4" thick plates which I am sure it is incorrect. I truly appreciate your help on this issue.

Regards,

Answer
Hi Adam,

Your principle seems OK, but I do not know what a nelson stud is, nor it's diameter. Have you taken account that the punching shear circumference is larger than that of the stud? Also, you can mitigate the problem by perhaps introducing thick washers?

I hope that helps!

Kind regards,

Arshad
