Question
Could you please explain how a raft foundation can be progressively stiffened, as the need arises from ground variation or the disposition of loading ? Thank you

Hi Martin,

I am not sure whether I have understood you correctly, but if a raft has say more loading in the middle than you can design it to be thicker there than along the edges. The change in thickness should be gradual and uniform so as not to create stress concentrations.

The same principle can be applied for zones of weaker soil, so as to bridge across weaknesses.
