Civil Engineering/Vierendeel Truss

Question
Dear Arshad,
I have a question about Vierendeel Truss (no diagonals) that I have to solve it by hand (because of an exam). Top and bottom chords have a point load at node points. All I am looking for is that an approximate method for top and bottom chord design mainly. I would truly appreciate your help on this issue, and thanks in advance.
Regards,
Adam

Answer
Hi Adam,

That is easy! Just work out your overall bending moment and shear force diagram between the 2 main supports. Then at each bay location, divide the bending moment by the c/c distance between the T & B booms, and that will give you the tension or compression forces.

In the same way, you can share the shear force equally between the T and B booms (assuming they are the same sections/sizes).

I hope that is clear and of help!

Kind regards,

Arshad
