QUESTION:  Thanks for reply, further I want to know the following  1. What are the source of carbon dioxide which penetrate the cover concrete of RCC?          2. In Delhi, if a top floor flat of four story apartment having mud phaska treatment on terrace, remains unattended for more than 10 years, due to rain, pollution, growing of vegetation, overflowing of overhead tanks (of drinking water which is treated with chloride)          (i) is carbonation is possible?          (ii) what are the defects can be occurred in this flat?   3. Whether carbonation in RCC is due to execution or due to poor maintenance?

Answer
Hi Bupinder,

The main source of carbonation is exposure to the atmosphere and then with the additional presence of moisture and air this leads to corrosion of the rebar.

Your example of the roof is one where you can easily get carbonation and corrosion of the rebar.

Hope that helps!

Kind regards,

Arshad
