To be a very good engineer in any field you need to have a strong technical background and practical experience to apply these skills.

One of the best civil engineer will always try to visualize the things practically and find the limitations of the solutions he or she is suggesting.

If you are taking courses  in civil engineering find the best stream of civil engineering that interest you. It may be structural engineering, municipal, or transportation or something else. Then focus on those subjects and always try to visualize the theory you come across.

If you are a practicing new engineer find a knowledgeable experienced engineer around you and discuss with him alternate solutions to clients need, this will help you learn from his experience.
