Hi
How would you calculate the minimum width and depth required for a tradtional strip foundation for a cavity wall of 275mm nominal with with a load per metre run of 45kN/m, in firm clay.The allowable bearing pressure has been assessed at 80kN/m2

Hi Campbell,

That's simple- divide 45 by 80 and you have the minimum width of the strip, i.e. 565mm. However, I would recommend a minimum width (to allow for weight of soil and footing itself), of at least 700 to 750 mm, and a thickness of at least 250mm, with nominal rebar at the bottom (say T10 at 200mm centres both ways). The footing should be placed at least 600-800mm below original/finished ground level.
