Question
I'm wondering what the compressive strength of tuff stone is. I know this is used a lot in construction in Kenya, and I'm trying to provide some structural advice to an architect that wants to build a 2 story load bearing masonry building. Thanks.

Hi Amanda,

That depends on the quality of the stone, but anwhere between 2 and 5 N/mm2 would be a crushing stress- so working stress should be say half that.

Of course, the strength of the wall is also dependant on the strength of the bedding mortar, and the sizes of the stones.
