Civil Engineering/tuning combs

Question
Thanks for answering, but another question...isn't the musical instrument thingy called a tuning fork [with 2 prongs]?  These look like a comb for your hair. And what exactly is a 'civil' engineer?-------------------------

I recently acquired a set of tuning combs.  They look old, are metal [brass?] and came in a brass envelope.  Do you have any idea what they are used for?  I thought perhaps they had an engineering application.  Each comb has teeth that are a different size. If you aren't familiar with them, can you recommend another area of expertise I should search within?  Thanks!

Hi Elaine,

As far as I know, these are used more in mechanical engineering (where vibration and frequency of machinery, etc is evaluated), but not in civil engineering applications.

Of course, they are also used for musical instruments, which is the most common application.

I hope that helps!

Kind regards,

Arshad

Answer
Hi Elaine,

Yes, you are absolutely right- the musical ones are forks.

Visit the following website to get some background of civil engineering:   http://www.ice.org.uk/homepage/index.asp

Basically we deal with the built environment, from roads, bridges, water supply, dams, hydro schemes, tunnels, to buildings, warehouses, factories, towers, airports, etc.

Hope that answers your question!

Kind regards,

Arshad.
