Civil Service - Federal Air Marshal hiring process?

Expert: William A. McKelligott - 4/17/2008

Question
Hello sir.  I'm not sure if I am asking this question on the right forum, but I will try anyway.

I see where the FAA currently has openings for Federal Air Marshals.  I'm interested in applying, but unfortunately I will be 37 years old in August.  It's my understanding that 37 is the cutoff for new hires without previous experience.

I am finishing up the application, but am wondering if I'm wasting my time?  My concern is that I've only got 4 months until I turn 37, and the hiring process will probably take longer than that.

Assuming I am not applying to this position at too advanced an age, do you have any advice on filling out the application?  Specifically I'm looking for any tips on key words to use with regard to what recruiters are looking for.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Ben,

Thanks for your e-mail.  I think you should apply because even though timelines for hiring can be discouraging, you may get lucky, and here's why.  Recent news have highlighted the shortage of Air Marshals and I would think that there is enough money in the homeland security pipeline to bring folks on board before the end of the current fiscal year (which ends Sept. 30, 2008).  Usually what happens is that an agency that doesn't spend all of their money before the end of the FY is put on the spot when requesting equal or greater funding for the following year.  And we all know that agencies rarely give up their money without a fight...

As far as key tips for filling out the application, I would suggest looking for KSAs (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) info which is widely available on the web.

Good luck.
