Expert: William A. McKelligott - 5/4/2008

Question
Hi William,

Im fourteen and I am interested in getting a job with the CIA. I want to work as a paramilitary officer so what do I need to at this present moment and in the future to get that job?

Thankyou for your time, I appreciate it!

Kind Regards -Nathanael-

Answer
Hi, Nathanael
Thanks for your e-mail.  Employment with the CIA....mmmmm....let's see.  First of all, I would suggest that you check the CIA's website and see exactly what type of jobs are available with the agency at the present time and see what skills are needed to perform them (and thus be considered a candidate).  You mention that you want to become a paramilitary officer.  I am not an expert in careers that fall within the realm of the U.S. govt. intelligence community, so I can't give you first- hand advice.  However, some common sense would suggest that a stint in the military (perhaps some special ops training, navy SEAL, Army ranger or Green Beret, etc...) would prepare you well and perhaps get you one foot in the door.  As the CIA conducts work overseas, having some exposure to travel and foreign languages are of the essence.  Remember- the CIA's work is to a large extent intelligence gathering and undercover operations, so you don't want to stand out like a sore thumb when deployed overseas.  Read about the world, stay out of trouble (no drugs, DUIs, bad credit, as all those have the potential to keep you from getting a top secret clearance).

I hope this helps.  And one more thing- don't forget to enjoy your youth!!!
