Question
Dear Nicholas, I have worked for the post office for 27 years but I am going back to school in the hopes of doing something more meaningful. I of course have been looking at the private sector and never thought of other government jobs . What is the process to transfer to another agency? How do I find out what jobs are available? Thanks, Bob

Answer
Hi, Bob. There really isn't an interagency transfer procedure per se; it's just a matter of applying for open vacancies just as if you were a new applicant for Federal service. I'm sure that you're familiar with the various froms, etc. required to do this. One nice recent change is that most agencies will accept resumes instead of the old SF-171. I'm a bit surprised that you've been considering the private sector with as much time as you have in since your time in service & benefits would transfer if you do go to another government job; you're not all that far from the big brass ring! Anyhow, I keep a list of over 40 federal job websites (as well as all state job sites)on my home page: http://pages.prodigy.net/nick.kay/nick.kay.htm . The best place to start is the first link I have listed in the Fed job section: USAJOBS. They have an alphabetical list of the various job series that you can use to match to your experience and forthcoming degree.

I hope this helps- good luck!  Nick
