Civil Service - Interviews

Expert: Tracey Drake - 7/27/2006

Question
I separated from the miltary a 2 years ago.  I landed a job with the Forestry Service.  Unfortunately, pay makes it a dead end job.  I have been applying for DOD/DLA jobs closer to home.  My resume lands me the interviews and the interview goes well. It seems that I keep getting beat out by someone who already works there.  Is there anything I can do different?  I am doing everything right.  Right down to the thank you letter.

Signed

Disappointed

Answer
Can you send me a copy of your resume and thank you letter that you are using? Let's maybe see if critical keywords or transferable skills are not on there and therefore not getting into their searchable database. I would also be interested to know if you are customizing your resume to meet the job you are applying for and making sure that job titles and descriptions offer a focused and direct link to the job posting... this is crucial. Also, what are the general results of the interviews? How do you know they are going well, is my question. Are they giving you follow-up feedback. I would love to be able to help you but it would be helpful if I had some additional information as I mentioned above. Best wishes, Tracey Drake
