Clarinet/Bore Oil

Question
Hello,

I just purchased a new clarinet and the company I purchased it from is telling me never to use bore oil. My instructor says use it every 3 - 4 months. Buffet will not answer my question. What are your thoughts on using bore oil?

Bryan

Answer
Hi Bryan,

I used oiled my bore very sparingly when I purchased my first wood clarinet.  I haven't bothered with my subsequent clarinets (which have been Greenlines). All clarinets have survived nicely.  The company probably doesn't want the pads to get damaged by the bore oil, I bet some people have caused some major issues in the pursuit of proper bore care.  If you decide to go ahead and oil the bore once or twice a year, consider having your instructor go over how to do with you the first time. It feels good to take great care of something that means that much to you.

Enjoy your new instrument!

I am a former college music professor. I`ll be happy to discuss repertoire, set-up, music schools, technique, recordings, etc. If you have a question about the value of an instrument, please read this: Clarinets do not improve with age. The inside shape changes with use, making it more difficult to play in tune. A quality new clarinet can be purchased for $2000. I would generally not pay more than $300 for an older clarinet, and that is after an overhaul ($400) has already been done. That's just my opinion and I'm sure you can find someone who would pay more. If you want to know the year of your instrument, go to http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/
