Classic/Antique Car Repair/1967 Rolls Royce Brakes

Question
I have a friend that has a 1967 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.  He wants me to look at this problem he has and I have no experience at all with these cars.  Anyway, the front brakes start to drag when you drive it a while and the brake light comes on the dash.  He has had it to another mechanic and he said he fixed it, but it still drags.  From all I can see he replaced the rubber lines going to the calipers.  Also, this might sound silly, but where is the battery located?
Thanks for your time.

Pete

Answer
Hi Pete:
The Rolls Royce brake system is one of the most complicated and sophisticated ever built. It is totally Hydraulic and has dual brakes on the front and back wheels. Overkill, but that is the way it was designed. The brakes are controlled by dual nitrogen-charged accumulator that requires rebuilding about every 30,000 miles or so. This could be your problem. The hydraulic system controls the brake as well as the auto leveling system that automatically adjust the car height base on the weight being carried.

The only thing I can tell you is, "Don't let any rookie mechanic mess with those brakes. They will screw it up for sure".

Find a Bentley dealer / repair shop or a British repair shop. They are your best source for working on the complicated parts of these cars.

Expertise

Visit my website at: http://www.classytransportation.com/ I can answer most questions about autos built in the 60's 70's and 80's. Specifically, Lincolns, Rolls Royces and the Excaliburs. Mechanical issues and technical questions are my expertise. I also have a general knowledge of most older automobiles. Keep in mind, I can only provide answers if the questions are very specific and complete. Without details, I can only speculate and that's not good for solving your problem.

Experience

I have owned and maintained Silver Shadows for over 10 years now. I find most mechanics and even Rolls Royce mechanics have very little knowledge about these automobiles. I have researched these cars in quite a bit of detail and can pretty much tell you what is wrong, if you can describe the behavior in detail. I have saved quite a few RR owners a lot of money and aggravation due to improper diagnosis.
