Classic/Antique Car Repair/1966 Impala Horn

Question
I have a 1966 Impala that I cannot get the horn to blow. I've ran a wire directly from the horn to the battery and it blows. So I replaced the horn Relay and it will not blow. Any Ideas?

Answer
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you should have a quarter moon rim inside the steering wheel with a round hub in the middle to activate the horn.

If this is the case, I'm guessing there is a contact problem there. To activate the horn, a metal plate on the hub make contact with another metal plate inside the steering column. Take the horn activator off and check these contacts. You should be able to activate it with a screw driver once the cover is off. If not I suspect a wiring break or loose contact somewhere if the horn wire.

However, most likely the contacts are worn to a point you are not making contact with the activation switch. Cleaning and adjusting the contact points may be all that is needed.

Hope this helps.

Expertise

Visit my website at: http://www.classytransportation.com/ I can answer most questions about autos built in the 60's 70's and 80's. Specifically, Lincolns, Rolls Royces and the Excaliburs. Mechanical issues and technical questions are my expertise. I also have a general knowledge of most older automobiles. Keep in mind, I can only provide answers if the questions are very specific and complete. Without details, I can only speculate and that's not good for solving your problem.

Experience

I have owned and maintained Silver Shadows for over 10 years now. I find most mechanics and even Rolls Royce mechanics have very little knowledge about these automobiles. I have researched these cars in quite a bit of detail and can pretty much tell you what is wrong, if you can describe the behavior in detail. I have saved quite a few RR owners a lot of money and aggravation due to improper diagnosis.
