Question
My powerglide leaks at the rear main seal.  Parts stores specializing in this vintage offer replacement seals of rubber or of rope, both are in two sections.  Is one better than the other?
Also, there is no gas filter.  Which is better, the origiinal type that came with the car or new in line filters?
thanks Brad

Answer
I have used both the rope and the rubber seal. I prefer the rubber seal as long as you follow the instructions that come with it, and us the amount of sealer and place the sealer in the places recommended. As for the filter I believe that the Rochester carburetor that came on your Chevrolet had a porous bronze filter in the carburetor inlet fitting. These filters were very good. If it were my car I would have an in line filter also. But i would place the filter under the car in the line between the fuel tank and the fuel pump. It will then do it's work and be out of sight.
