Question
have a collapsible standard steering column. I cant get the housing to go down far enough to get the retaining clip on.3 speed auto on column.

I am  Model A guy.  Not sure what you are talking about.  Try to get a service manual for you car, find a plymouth or chrysler car club and join it and let them help you.  If you are trying to put an automatic shifter on a std. column, you may need additional parts.  The column is pretty simple.  Keep taking it apart until you figure it out.  Go to these sites and see if you can find help there:
