Classic/Antique Car Repair/85 Pontiac Sunbird

Question
Do I need to drop the fuel tank and start fresh?  My Sunbird has been sitting outside for 7 years uncovered. Engine is like new with only 10,000 miles.  Started it 6 months ago and ran rough...you could smell the old fuel (1/4 tank). Today, changed plugs added 2 gal fuel, but won't start. Fires with starting fluid or when primed with gas.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the old gas, short of dropping the tank?  There seems to be an anti-siphon screen in the filling hose. If I need to drop the tank...how do I accomplish this?  Will I need to change the fuel pump and fuel filter too?  I really appreciate any help you can give.

Answer
Your fuel pump may be frozen. Are you getting any fuel in the carbs?
If not, change the fuel pump. Also, change the fuel filter and yes, dump and clean the fuel tank. You should have a drain plug somewhere on the tank. If not, you will have to drop it. I'm betting you also need new plugs, wires and points after sitting for 7 years.

Expertise

Visit my website at: http://www.classytransportation.com/ I can answer most questions about autos built in the 60's 70's and 80's. Specifically, Lincolns, Rolls Royces and the Excaliburs. Mechanical issues and technical questions are my expertise. I also have a general knowledge of most older automobiles. Keep in mind, I can only provide answers if the questions are very specific and complete. Without details, I can only speculate and that's not good for solving your problem.

Experience

I have owned and maintained Silver Shadows for over 10 years now. I find most mechanics and even Rolls Royce mechanics have very little knowledge about these automobiles. I have researched these cars in quite a bit of detail and can pretty much tell you what is wrong, if you can describe the behavior in detail. I have saved quite a few RR owners a lot of money and aggravation due to improper diagnosis.
