Classic/Antique Car Repair/1930 Model A Ford

Question
The car is jumping out of third gear driving forward on a steep incline.  This is an ongoing problem.  No one else seems to be able to help.  How do you rectify? Thank you.

Answer
Take off the trans. cover and repair the shifter ball.  It is probably warn into an oval shape.  This is not an easy repair, but nothing to be afraid of.  The detents have to be cleaned out and a good inspection of the inside.  Better get the book we all use, the Model A ford mechanics hand book.  about $35 from MARC or one of the A parts suppliers.  Get the red book, not the green one.  It has all the info you will need to enjoy your A.
Good luck and be very careful if you have to take the spring apart at the bottom of the shifter rod.  Tie it down before you pull the keeper.
