Question
How do you replace a timing chain on 1971 buick skylark custom? The car just keeps turning over and over again and backfires, had a local mechanic look at it and he said timing was off.
This is a complex process that requires special tools. You must first,
pull the front of the engine off. Once off, special tools are used
to remove the chain. Also, once the new chain is on, the timing must
be reset to manufacturer spec. It also a good time to replace the water
pump as well. Otherwise it is most likely next to go and you will have to
pull the front engine off again.
Expect to pay $500 - $700 for the whole job.
