Question
We have a 1947 olds dynamic 76 4 dr sedan with a flathead 6. We would like to know how to identify the rearend in this car to order parts. Also we would like to know of any retailers who sell differential parts for something this old. We are guessing we are going to need a ring and pinion or an axle or both since the car will not move, but the driveshaft turns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that you might be getting the cart before the horse here till you check the car out. The most likely cause of what you describe is a broken axle. I would remove both rear axles before getting any parts for the rear end and check them. As far as parts go my stock answer for “where can I find….” Is to latch on to a copy of Hemmings Motor News, the old car hobbies classified bible. There are many companies that supply parts for old cars and you will find them in Hemmings. www.hemmings.com
